Band is...
It’s discovering who you really are
It’s giving the gift of music
It’s meeting new friends and old friends.
It’s going for the gold
It’s taking pride in being a band geek
It’s the feeling you get after performing perfectly
It’s the endless inside jokes
It’s the feeling of accomplishment when you master a difficult piece
It’s the emotional attachment to 60+ other people
It’s testing in front of other people
It’s not gloating when you get first chair
It’s recognizing that last chair is just as important as first
It’s doing it anyways
It’s trying your hardest
It’s the times you will always remember
It’s crying tears of joy when you win first place at a competition
It’s breaking your instrument…and crying because you won’t get to play
It’s memorizing music, and then forgetting it
It’s learning to be individual
It’s realizing how much you’ll miss the 8th graders when they leave
It’s not caring about crying in public
It’s standing ovations
It’s doing things you never dreamed of doing before you joined band
It’s making up new words
It’s caffeine and sugar highs
It’s naming your instrument
It’s learning about music
It’s learning about others
It’s learning about life in general
It’s experiencing some of life’s greatest moments
It's freaking out when you forget your Band music, and not caring when you don't have your math homework for the third time in a row
It’s realizing that the trumpets are crazy
It’s being excited for school to start, just because of band
It’s being different
It’s being nervous about your solo
It’s recognizing that everybody matters
It’s competing against your friend next door during a competition
It’s a bittersweet feeling when your band does better
It’s having Happy Birthday sung to you, out of tune, by the whole band
It’s the many speeches
It’s about getting better every year
It’s having your name forgotten a few times
It’s keeping all of your music from the day you start 6th grade, until the day you graduate
It’s so many memories
It’s a sad feeling when you find that you can’t do it forever
It’s adrenaline rushes
It’s being yelled at
It’s being praised
It’s losing your mind, and then fitting in
It’s trying to teach your friends notes on your instrument…And failing
It’s being there for your friends
It’s making lists like these that make you realize too much
It’s trying not to laugh during rests
It’s making your director laugh, even though he’s trying not to
It’s arriving at the band room 1 hour early, to be scared out of your mind
It’s being nervous before chair auditions
It’s remembering your music from the concert three years ago
It’s making your director proud of you
It’s disappointing him (and feeling horrible about it)
It’s sitting up straight, feet flat on the floor, on the edge of your chair
It’s numbering and naming your director’s speeches
It’s playing a piece, and then having someone behind you play it better
Its breath support
It’s having ‘eyes of pride!’
It’s being out of tune
It’s having your music stuck in your head during your next class
It’s learning to lead
It’s learning to follow
It’s writing in notes because your stand partner forgot some of them
It’s getting the crooked stand (or the one that slowly sinks down when you put your music on it)
It’s learning a new instrument
It’s dreaming about band at night
It’s dreaming about band during the day
It’s playing when you’re sick
It’s having perfect attendance in school because of band …
Its a thousand tears, but a billion laughs
It’s winning, losing, and moving on
It’s misunderstandings
It’s laughing more than talking
It’s forcing a smile, even when you want to cry
It’s apologizing (over and over again)
It’s admitting when you are wrong
