A Change to User Registration

Due to recent events, and after discussing this with Little Wolf.

User registration now requires admin approval.
You will be sent a e-mail when your account has been approved.

This hopefully have little effect on our community.

The decision wasn't reached lightly, and we feel its in the community's best interest.

I know it feels like there's no love or trust when you sign up for a forum or message board, then have to wait to be approved for it however in the long run it's for the best. The integrity of the forum needs to be maintained and all it takes is a handful of souls to disrupt what is to me a great community of people here.

I think it's a great idea.
It shows whoever is signing up that they are joining a serious community, one where the administration and members want to do their best to keep this a wonderful place to come.�

I completely agree with this as well. It has angered me that our happy little community is constantly being disrupted, and this is a very good idea! Hopefully this will decrease, and eventually get rid of all the spammers.

Me too, it shows that we are aware of those nasty buggers who liked to disrupt peace. I have the full support of this notion. Hopefully it will make a huge difference.

I agree with this idea as well. This is good because it could prevent nasty trolls from spamming this precious board and the community. I do not want to see CW go through what other message boards I go have been through.

but when the user first register.. how will you know if that person is going to be a forum trasher? they can change their nicks when registering..

nevertheless, i support this decision and hope this method will keep our 'little' forum more peaceful and nice..

I also fully support this new idea.  I have seen too many forums where people join just to make trouble.  I suppose that as a way to regulate it, the IPs of troublemakers could be recorded.  It might be troublesome, but a ban list for bad IPs could be started.  I hope my idea is helpful.

We have sources/ways to find that out.

Most users' IPs are dynamic so having a ban list wouldn't be really that helpful but thanks anyway for the concern. The mods and admins are doing their best to keep the forum in order.

As an admin for another SMF board, I pretty much know what Little Wolf means by "sources" but I'm not at liberty to divulge that information, sorry...�  � 

That is, of course, if the "type of sources" he's talking about is what I'm thinking...  I might just be wrong completely 

But, I support this all the way... keep those types off the board and this board will remain very fun

I think it's a good idea to keep spammers and the like off the forums, especially those types of people who might have IPs that are difficult to ban or whatever and I'm in complete support of it, but I have a question about this.  I know you'll receieve an email when your account has been approved, but could you also possibly send an email if your account isn't approved and how long would the approval typically take?  It's just that I've tried to join a forum that required your account to be approved before and I never got any email that said it was approved and I never understood why either, because I would never do anything to break the rules of the site and I hate spamming and trolls as much as the next person does.  And if the approving of an account will take a while, some people might give up waiting for it and completely forget about this site wondering if their account was ever approved, so I think it would be good to send people a notice letting them know their account wasn't approved and maybe explain to them why, so that they don't accuse us of being a bunch of jerks when we aren't because their account wasn't approved.

The Administration checks in here daily (today's members confirms this) so I'm confident that they check registrations on a daily basis so it shouldn't be too much of a worry. It's a shame this system was implemented because of one idiot (won't name him or the 14 user-names he uses) but if it keeps the peace here, I'm in full support of it

He is a person we don't speak of around here who likes to create multiple accounts since each one he uses gets banned. I called him out somewhere else and he went ballistic, calling me every name in the book and threatening me. Heh. Like his threats mean anything to me. That's all you need to know.
