Meiling Li
« on: September 30 2005, 11:57 am »
This thread is for the one and only Meiling Li. I checked this entire board, and not one thread is dedicated to her. I feel that she should be acknowledged because she really is an important part to the story, and even though she isn't my favorite character, she is one of my favorite characters especially after episodes 43 Sakura's Farewell to Meiling and episode 60 Sakura's Precious Friend!

To start this thread off, there is one thing I've always wondered from the show. In Japanese culture, it is proper etiquette to call a person by their last name. The only exceptions to this is if you're close family, very good friends, or in love with each other, so why did Sakura and Tomoyo always call her Meiling-chan, but she would call them Kinomoto-san, or Daidoji-san? Also, they called Syaoran in the beginning Li-kun until after episode 57 Sakura Syaoran and the Elevator, then Sakura called him Syaoran-kun.

I think it might be because Meiling and Syaoran both have same last name and this avoids confusion, but then why didn't they call her Li-chan? This is my theory. I would love to hear what you think.

hmm i agree on your theory moezy-chan and probaly it is correct.
To avoid confusion.

But maybe they dont call Meiling by her last name because she's a foreigner, but then Syaoran is too... *ok scratch that*

Your probaly right moezy-chan, but maybe she is a girl?? *shrugs*

But i stick to your theory moezy-chan =]p~

---

Meiling to me, wasnt as an important charater because she alwaysed annoyed me XD
cause she annoyed Syaoran!
Her being all lovey dovey with Syaoran annoyed me because he didnt lover her back, and didnt get the hints XD.

But i learned to appriciate Meiling like you moezy-chan, after episode 59.
After she got heart broken, she didnt stay  mad at
Syaoran and she loved him so much that she got over him and didnt spite him after it. She still loves him *as a friend and cousin now* and still there for him no matter what like from the beginning.

After that i respected her and i find her kawaii because of that ^^

About the name, I like to think of it as another mystery about name callings in CCS... another one is that everyone, including Chiharu, calls Yamazaki by his last name instead of his first.

It could be because they didn't want to call two people of the same name. Calling them both "Li" even if it is "Li-chan" would probably cause confusion (Maybe someone would think that Sakura could be calling Syaoran in a cute way... Lol!!). It probably eases things a bit if they call Meiling by her first name. And since Meiling doesn't mind, I suspect that Meiling might've prefered it if they called her Meiling.

Even though Meiling was used in the anime to "spice" things or make the series longer, she'll always be a memorable character. Her presence in the anime may be irritating to some, but I see her as an equally important character cause not only do we realize how kind Syaoran can be to the people he cares about, we also realize that love can sometimes be the most painful thing in the world.

That might be the reason! Arigatou Cherry tiger-chan! And for such a good analysis, hai, cookie!

Arigatou, that's how I feel too! She brought the show some life and I believe she showed the most growth.

Yeah, i liked Meiling in there because she does spice things up.

Anyways, maybe they call her by her first name because they are more comfortable with calling girls by their first name than boys. And Meiling doesn't call them by their first name because like Syaoran, maybe she'll only say family members first names.

It's possible, also, Ced-san, don't forget. You're not allowed to post one sentence answers. Back on topic, I guess that's true. After all, the girl from episode 7 with the Silent Card, Sakura called her by her first name. That could be the reason.

That's alright. If you want more information, go here:

This will tell you all you need to know about the rules!

And as for Meiling being related to Syaoran, the answer is in her last name. They have the same last name, and only men can keep their names after marriage. So their fathers must be either brothers or cousins. I'd like to believe that Syaoran's father and Meiling's father are like 1st or 2nd cousins so they aren't directly related, and their not reproducing through incest.

Is there like a law about marring your first cousin and stuff?
or you allowed to marry what ever cousin?

In America there is. I know you live in Australia, so I don't know what your laws are, and I certainly don't know about China. Don't forget; this is CLAMP. They almost never make sense!

In America, I think we can marry past our 4th cousin. I'd have to check. I'd do it now, but I'm too lazy. Let me get back to you later.

I think she'd probably approve. She didn't show any complaints about it in the 1st movie, and it would keep the bloodline pure. Even if Meiling doesn't have magic, she is still a part of the Li-clan. Her children might possibly have magic. As always, this is mere speculation. I don't have anything to back it up, except for my ability to over-analyze!

Hmmm interesting, but what i picked up from the other thread, about Syaoran's mother kissing Sakura, it could me that she's the daughter in law that she approves off ?? ^^

The problem with the theory that everyone calls her Meilin to avoid confusion with Shaoran is that in the Maze card episode, when Mizuki-sensei reunites Meilin with the others after getting lost in the maze, she calls her "Li-san" while Shaoran is there with her.  I think this is just something we'll never understand about Japanese culture unless we take lots of classes or do lots of research about it or something.  Anyway, Meilin is actually my favorite CCS character.  Even when I was a CC dubbie, I always liked her the most.  I admired her because of her devotion to Shaoran and she wasn't just devoted to having a relationship with him, either.  I believe she was devoted to doing anything she could to make him happy, since she seems to follow a similar policy to Tomoyo's "As long as the person I love is happy, I'm happy" policy, expect Meilin's is "Until the day you find the person you love the most, I'll be your bride".

At first glance she seems like she's a very selfish person, but really she was always thinking only about Shaoran.  Even when she came to Japan to help capture the cards, it wasn't for her own self-glory but for Shaoran.  I also liked how even though Shaoran ended up dumping her for Sakura, she still liked both him and Sakura and continued to remain friends with them.  In fact, I believe that after Shaoran broke up with her, Meilin ended up becoming even closer friends with Sakura and Tomoyo.  She's also a really cool fighter and it makes you wonder if she could ever beat Sakura up. ^^;; I actually find that the more flaws a character has in their personality, the more I end up liking them, which may be why Meilin is my favorite CCS character.  I just think she's really interesting and even though she was never in the manga, I still can't imagine what the anime would have been like without her.  I was actually kind of disappointed that she wasn't in the manga.
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com
