I think I'll wait for the widescreen releases from now on. The colour on the pan and scan was terrible and the whole show looked cropped.

That was good. Of course I've only read the first two volumes or so of the manga...and so I don't have as much attatchment to or knowledge of the story, but I really thought that episode was well done. I like it. Yuuko is so cool!

Yuuko is awesome. ^^ Having now watched both the Shinsen and the Kyuuketsuki version, I really can't decide which I preferred. They both have good and not-so-good points in the translation. Shinsen's sub had some unnecessarily exaggerated vulgar language, since I'm rather sure that Watanuki did not use the Japanese equivalent of the F word in the episode, but they also call a lot on the official Del Rey translations, which is good. I'm really looking forward to Doumeki showing up. Watanuki/Doumeki is one of my OTP's, and I have great hope that the show will have lots of the Watanuki/Doumeki shippiness that the manga has, since Maru and Moro come THIS close to kissing in the OP. That made my day, btw. ^^ Homoeroticism, yeah!

mmm... about the swearing, I was wondering about that too. If I can write the Japanese romanji for the word for conversation purposes?

The full word in Japanese is: kuso

Watanuki was saying: so so so so so

It very well could have been the "k" word.  :heh:  But in a more natural way, but I don't know. I'm not exactly fluent.

I found the Kyuu sub to be the best. The dialogue just sounded more natural. Compare the next episode previews to see what I mean.

Well, at one point, Watanuki DID say 'Kuso.' But what I'm talking about is in the beginning of the episode, when Watanuki is running away from the spirits. Just before he touches Yuuko's fence, he says something to the spirit. The Shinsen sub has him say, 'Don't f@ck with me,' whereas the Kyuuketsuki version just has him say, 'Get off of me.' Quite a bit of difference.

Yeah, good point. That does sound a bit crude for Watanuki's character doesn't it. :D

episode 2 is out by another fansub group.  It's about the lying woman. 
i got a feeling that they're not going to include tsubasa link in xxxholics anime.  The story in anime and manga is a little different.

the anime skipped the part Watanuki asking about the sakura's magic wand.  The woman survived the accident and Watanuki brought her to hospital. Himawari was not there during the accident.

I've seen the sub of the second episode.

The woman didn't die, which is disappointing, as it seems to indicate that they're trying to 'lighten' up xxxHOLiC, which is a bad idea. The only way the woman living will work is if she plays some roll later in the series. And they do seem to be cutting Tsubasa out of xxxHOLiC, what with only the black mokona showing up and some other differences from the manga.
All and all, a disappointing follow-up to the fantastic first episode. Hope it improves.
