Shoujo or Shounen?
« on: March 27 2006, 07:48 am »
:keke: I know this sounds pretty weird...  :sweatdrop: and gomen nasai if this has been done before, but...Which do you like more, shoujo or shounen (anime and manga)? Please explain why, too... :keke:

Since I posted this thread, I'll go first, I guess... :sweatdrop:

I like Naruto, Gundam Seed Destiny, Inuyasha, and Full Metal Alchemist, but I also like Full Moon wo Sagashite, CCS, TRC, and Sailor Moon...
So, I like both....shoujo and shounen, equally...

No, it hasn't been done before; at least not to my knowledge.

Let's see, I like Card Captor Sakura, Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle, Mahoraba Heartful Days, all Miyazaki movies, Magical Lyrical Nahona, and Fruits Basket.

So it looks like Shoujo wins.

I prefer shounen manga, having read BLEACH, Tsubasa Reservoir chronicle, meitantei Conan, Naruto, Negima, and such. I prefer action type manga over manga about relationships  :sweatdrop:

^_^ I like action, too. Maybe that's why I'm having trouble with deciding on which to call my manga that I'm working on now...^^'  I'll classify it as shounen/shoujo...I guess

A tought question. I'd say I like neither - action bores me, but with the exception of CCS, I dislike sugary, fluffy shoujo stories. I'd rather have a story focusing on the characters' relationship than having them save the world or something, though, but in short I prefer more unisex stories.

EDIT: Naturally, I'm not saying that no shounen deal with relationship or that shoujo doesn't include fighting... I'm just speaking in very general terms.

i like scrapped princess, pretears, full moon, Tsubasa, card captor sakura, black cat, kyou kara Maou, and bleach.  I also read shounen jump  and nakayoshi manga magazine therefore i like both shoujo and shounen genre.  It doesn't matter as long as it has a good plot/ story and nice characters.

Hmm... I generally find stories focusing on relationships the most interesting, but action manga isn't too bad usually. Relationships come in all kinds of varieties, but there seem to be only a certain amount of variations on the action manga/anime story lines. Or perhaps I'm just bitter, after being forced to watch some bad shounen anime. CLAMP often strikes a good balance between relationships and action for me... even though their main focus is usually relationships. But shoujo manga where everything is sweet and perfect drive me crazy as much as bad shounen manga.

And Okamirei, I wouldn't call Tsubasa shounen. I guess it could be argued, but I've always thought of it as more shoujo or gender ambiguous.

I agree with Okamirei, because Syaoran is the main chara, plus it has a lot more action in it, but because of Syaoran's relationship with Sakura, I guess it can be called shoujo, too... ^_^ It's how you look at it...i guess...

Many shoujo series have male leads; look at 'X' with Kamui. As for the action, 'X' also is one of the most violent, bloody manga I've ever read, with many incredible fight scenes. Plenty of action there, even if the focus of the story is the relationships. Plus, shounen-ai and yaoi, which are considered by many to be sub-genres of shoujo, are all about males. The thing is, men and boys tend not to want to read stories that have only female leads; most men tend towards stories that either have a male as the lead, or have a female lead balanced by a male equal. Women, however, are far more comfortable with either male or female leads. There are far more female fans of shounen manga than male fans of shoujo manga, I find.

Plus, I wouldn't really say that Syaoran is THE single lead character of Tsubasa: I'd say that he shares the spot with Sakura. She's just as important as he to the story. But that point could very easily be argued. And I think I'm getting off-topic. ^__^;

Tsubasa is definitely a Shounen, I'm sure of it because on the hardback editions of the Japanese versions, it states "Shonen magazine comics" on the bound of the sleeve cover.

DNAngel (Shounen?)
DNAngel is a Shoujo.
Lol, I thought it was a Shoujo when I read vol.1 of the manga, but how wrong was I?

To be honest, I use to like only Shoujo manga because I'm the type of person who goes for anything aimed at my gender. However when I found out that there are many people who grabs any manga regardless of what gender they are aimed at and loved any manga regardless of their gender, I just sorta copied them and grabbed a Shonen manga and when I read a fair amount of Shonen I come to the point that I like both Shoujo and Shonen ^^

Here are some of my faves....
~ Bleach (Shonen)
~ Cardcaptor Sakura (Shoujo)
~ Tsubasa Reservior Chronicles (Shonen)
~ Chobits (Shonen)
~ Tokyo Mew Mew (Shoujo)
~ Cyber Idol Mink (Shoujo)
~ Mouryoukiden; legend of the Nymp (Not sure, but I think it's a Shoujo)
~ Hyper Rune (Not sure, but I think Shonen cos of the action)
~ Gohou Drug/Legal Drug (?)
~ Kamichama Karin (Shoujo)
~ Pita Ten (I think Shonen)

And there some others that I like, but I won't bore you with my list. As you can see there is a fair amount of Shoujo and Shonen that I like, so I voted for both.

Besides I don't like Romantic girly Mangas much, but the only exception is Pita Ten and Marmalade boy is okay I guess... however I'm a fan of Mahou Shoujo mangas such as CCS, Tokyo Mew Mew, Sailor Moon, Saint tail etc...

Tsubasa is a shounen manga.  Quoted from Wikipedia, "Tsubasa: RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE (ツバサ-RESERVoir CHRoNiCLE-) is a manga by CLAMP which is running in Shonen Magazine in Japan. Tsubasa means a wing or wings in Japanese."  Anyway, my vote went to both.  I'll watch/read anything from any genre of anime as long as it's interesting to me, but I find that shounen series tend to work better in anime form and shoujo series work better in manga form.  It's just I usually find that action scenes are more exciting in an animated format but the plots and characterization in shoujo series is usually handled better in their manga counterparts than their anime adaptations.

I agree with that. It has fighting and stuff, but the main aspect is the relationship between Syaoran and Sakura (...and too some extent, there's an aspect to Kuro-tan's a Fai's relationship too. Haha. *waves a little flag*)

Gender ambiguous works fine. A shounen-jo. >> Or something.

Yeah, I like shounen and shoujo equally. I love Fruits Basket, CCS, TRC, and stuff, but I also love FMA, Bleach, HUNTERXHUNTER (yay!) and stuff. So <3

Chobits is a seinen (young men's) series.  It even says in the back of the English versions of the Chobits manga that Clamp wrote it for men.  Chobits has too much sexual humor and fanservice to be anything close to shoujo.

I must say I agree with this. I adore shounen and shoujo. I read/ watch both, and I can't really decide which I like better. I adore almost any series in Shounen Jump, but I also enjoy things like Ouran High School Host Club, Fruits Basket, and Peach Girl. Ultimately, though, after all the sugary sweetness that can be found in shojo, I need to balance it out with some wholesome scenes of destruction and chaos found in shounen. :P

Shoujo. Because shoujo animes are more focused in character development than the shounen ones, i think. o.o But a shounen anime can have a lot of psychology too. ^^

Also, most of my favorite animes are in shoujo genre...
