Anime - For Boys Or Girls
« on: April 15 2005, 06:47 am »
Yes, yet another topic started by me!

Has anyone else found that they like anime and manga that's meant for the opposite gender? I mean, I like Inuyasha and Naruto, but they're meant to be shonen - for boys.

And a lot of anime is actually aimed at boys - girl's anime is often designed for both genders, but most boy's anime is meant to just be read by boys, and appears in boys' magazines.

What do you think?

Oh yes,

Prince of Tennis was made for boys but more girls watch it than boys XD

I happen to be one of those girls who watches it as well as Whistle!, One Piece, and Yu-Gi-Oh! too.

Yeah, I watch Yu-Gi-Oh!....still don't quite get why it's meant for boys though....

Well, I think that It depends. For example I, being a girl, HATE Dragonball Z, and yet I like Hikaru No Go, which is also Shonen.

Also, My boyfriend Tony can't stand Sailor Moon, but loves CCS, which are both Shojo. See?

(btw, there is a Shojo magazine too)

Yeah as Nyoko said, it's all people's tastes as well....

I may like Prince of Tennis but I'm not too big fan of....Shaman King.

Then sometimes you're not sure wheither the series is for girls or boys x_x;

i hate it when people critisize you for liking a shonen or shoju manga or anime. i love loads of shoju mangas and animes, aswell as shonen stuff.

I watch any genre of anime as long as the story and characters are interesting to me.  To me, that's the most important aspect of any fictional story.  Anything else is just icing on the cake, so I watch a lot of different genres of anime.  I'll watch shoujo, shounen, fighting, comedy, mecha, monster taming, shounen-ai, and I would watch more horror anime, I just haven't gotten around to watching it yet.  Probably the only genre of anime I don't like is hentai.  It just doesn't really appeal to me, although I like reading hentai fics.  I just don't like seeing it in action.....
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com

Doesn't matter to me what the anime is aimed at...if it's good and I like the art and storyline, I'll watch it regardless :)

Card Captor Sakura. Rate it real well, and I'm not afraid to risk my masculinity over it. I'm a sucker for fabulous OSTs, twists in the storyline, and great romantic pairings.

Everyone knows that CCS is a mahou shoujo anime. And yet I still like it, no matter how girly it may be.

Same with me Takeru. I hate it when people tease me for liking a what? A girly anime? or more like a kid's anime? yeah right... never have I seen a kid's anime with so many odd pairings/themes. :dodge:

Back to the topic, I also believe it depends on the anime. Some animes were just made with the boys as the target audience. But then that doesn't mean girls will not enjoy watching them as well. Girls may watch it because they have crush on the guy characters which in turn makes them "screaming fangirls".  :XD:

I watch a lot of anime without caring about the genre as long as the anime interests me. Even though i'm a girl, i watch naruto, Yu-Gi-Oh and prince of tennis. I also watch sailor moon and CCS.

i dont understand y theres a split like that in anime really...

actually, many ppl consider me as a kiddy tomboy...even my cousins say so coz i watch gundam series, naruto, zoids series, last exile...most of which happens to be action-packed or mech, and i fix my cousins broken models of gundam, colour, file, and twerk wif controls and sorta stuff...though they overlooked when i watch CCS (though i fall asleep sometimes--no offence), pokemon & digimon (i also fall asleep sometimes too...bleh~~). but in fact, i actually prefer the animes more "suited" to boys coz the colours dont really strain my eyes like the animes more "suited" for girls are, they are very pastel and contrasted, but animes that only aim for 1 group of audience is rare now coz there are not much that runs on the extreme ends of "boys or girls" that i know....and that'll affect ratings too~:P

though i happen to judge anime by the quality before seeing them too~~i'm naturally repeled fr anime like prince of tennis (the indepth of sports--wakaranai~~!!!):P eg. i dont like DBZ coz the animation is quite primitive, the storyline is all messed up (not in the nice way), & there seems no fixed plot....

I get that too but only from girl who don't share my love of anime and superheros. All my girl who share that hobby call me a girly girl. Go fiqure!  :surprised:
I like a variety of anime from CCS & Sailor Moon to Dbz & Inuyasha. I have to admit though, I didn't like Dbz at first. I think it's because I only ever saw the battles which were long and drawn out[How's that for an understatement!]. And I also loved SuperGALS & Trigun, different as night and day. I think what are seeing is a break down of the stereotype of what boys and girls should like. So let us rejoice that the world is progressing. Me personally, I'd take an Inuyasha action figure over perfume any day![/color]

Violence can be alright in anime...it just depends how they show it. Is that why there are boy's anime? Because they think girls can't handle blood and injury?

As long as the animation's good, storyline is excellent, and characters well developed, I watch/read it. Look at me, I'm a DBZ fan, not to mention: Yu Yu Hakusho, Gundam Wing and other shonen anime. Yet I like Shoujo too. I'm pretty much a mixed bag. :)
