Rika/Terada: Your opinion on the large age gap
Cardcaptor Takato:
--- Quote from: saki on May 16 2006, 11:01 pm ---I think I read somewhere that the marraige age in Japan used to be 13 years old for girls. They probably changed it to 15/16 by now. I guess things are pretty different in each country when it comes to situations like this.

The legal age for marriage in Japan is 18, but girls can get married at 16 with their parents' permission.

Strange, because that's the law in American as well.150 years ago a girl was considered an old maid if she didn't marry by the age of 16. Guess both culture and time play an important factor in that.
Smile_For_Me:
Well back in the day, 150 years ago in America, a person lived to about 30 or 40, so marring young was a thing to do.
In Japan, 150 years ago, and still going on very rarely today, are arranged marrages, which could start at age 4 back then, but now its at 16.

I have nothing against RikaxTerada (I like it more than dislike it :)), it's just that I think it would be really awkward... I'm guessing he's in his late 20's? And he gave her a ring? I know that people around that age would be really uncomfortable in that predicament. That's another thing: I was surprised Rika was ready about love and everything. I was also quite surprised that Terada wasn't interested in a person around his age (who'd be more developed emotionally and physically). But the coupling is agreeable. I see no problem in them continuing their relationship when she's considerably older. They're rather kawaii!

I would like to argue that, because even though Rika is young, she is extremely mature, whether by her cultural upbringing, or because she had to be. The Japanese culture is famous for their mannerisms, and being polite, but she seems to exceed that. She is always poised and graceful, in both actions and words. Her only give away that she is a child is that she gets embarrassed easily. Other than that, she always acts with grace. It could be because of her family, or her culture, or by choice, or even by all three factors. It is a bit confusing in that sense.
