Rika/Terada: Your opinion on the large age gap
« on: May 14 2006, 06:39 pm »
I mentioned Rika/Terada in another livejournal because...regardless of how offended some of the more conservative fans are- fact is that they are truly a couple. Canonwise. I myself was surprised when I first found out about it, and I suppose this sort of thing is questionable/illegal in the real world, but I was willing to accept them because CCS is only a cartoon after all, and this is CLAMP we're talking about. They specialize in, uh, unique pairings XD

I saw a Rika/Terada site once, and there were so many flames against the webmistress; flames telling her that she was 'sick' for devoting her time to such a pairing, etc...funny thing is, those people shouldn't really be blaming her- it's CLAMP that created Rika/Terada in the first place. So technically, if they're going to complain about that sort of couple, they should direct their sentiments towards the original source, not the fan.

Just my 2 cents.

I'll be closing the poll in a month or so.

i don't know about the illegal bit...wasn't there a scene in the manga or anime where Terada gave her a ring and told her that it would be an engagement ring when she were older? that would make it legal right?

(it's been so long, i can't remember if that scene actually happened but i think it did) :sweatdrop:

anywayz, i like the couple they're cute together :)

I don't really care for the couple but it doesn't really disturb me either, but then most things in general don't disturb me these days.  As already said, this is a cartoon where realism pretty much goes out the window and Clamp is famous for their controversial relationships.  Plus, they're only a couple in the manga whereas in the anime it's only a one-sided crush thing for Rika.
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com

I don't care more or less, however I think that the age gap and teacherxstudent relationship is way too weird. I mean if Rika was a teenager then thats a different story because when kids turns into a teenager, things start to change for them. eg. falling in love, caring about their appearances etc.... In my opinion, Rika is acting much older then her age. I mean it's sweet that they are together and a couple regarless of their ages, but somehow wrong because Rika is too young.
Do NOT under estimate the powers of strawberries

In Japan, the marring age for girls is 15-16, while the boys are 18-19, and CLAMP has had another teacherxstudent in there other works, more so in CCS, TouyaxKaho, EriolXKaho, Sakura's mother and father were even a student teacher relationship. The manga Suki also has that going on, along with Chobits, so Rika and Terada relationship isn't that strange in Japan, considering a teacher can be 20 years old in Japan. Here in America, Canada or anyother place in the world, this may seem disterbing, but it happenes. CLAMP likes to put real world things in their manga, even if it might cause an uproar over what it is over seas, but this is something we should understand, that it is in Japan and a Manga/Anime.

I hope this clears things Just a little bit.

Also, Japan happens to have very different laws than what we have here in America, Canada or any other place

Whlie it may not be seen as wrong in Japan, could very well be seen as wrong else where

I personally don't care, I mean he is taking it slow and simple, and I highly doubt he'll do anything that will compromise there relationship or rather, that will cause any tension between them

And besides, Rika-chan did have more chances with Terada after Kaho left. He became there 5th grade teacher and I think he also became there 6th grade teacher to.... (in the movie where Hope was involved, I recall one studeting saying 'Terada-sensei' to there teacher, either that is a typo in the subtlting *although the japanese voice did match)

I don't entirely mind it, but I also don't entirely support it. I'm more against it than anything since I am going to become a teacher and it is against the law for any teacher to have a relationship with their student. At least that's the law in America. But at the same time, it doesn't bother me since Terada-sensei is respectful to Rika and he has never tried to hurt her or overpower her in any situation. I keep being pulled both ways with this. It really is confusing.

I do understand that if the child is 18 year or younger, since Rika is 13 at the end of CCS, they should not have anykind of relationship going beyond simple glances and holding hands, which is the case, cause Terada said he would wait for her. It is common for students to date teachers in Japan as long as they are in College, they, the Japanese government, are not to happy when it comes to grade school and high schoolers.

I plan to become a teacher as well, but I will not date my students, because I am not a bad person. Yes it is a big no no in America and Canada, but remeber Japan is a different place, and if you have a one sided opion to things, it will become your downfall.

Ah! Another education major! I thought I was the only one. And I agree, if you're an adult I see no problem with it, but a minor and an adult that's a teacher, that is just wrong. Maybe when they're older though. They make a cute couple, and I see no problem with them except that he's her teacher, and it all goes back to me becoming a teacher. I would never date one of my students, despite the fact that I'll never teach above the age of 9.  :sweatdrop: But still.

Ha ha, that is funny, I plan to do that too, ages 9 and down, I wouldn't want to do high school, you know how mean the kids are to the teacher, Japan are looking for American teachers at the moment, I have an open spot, and I'm only a 1st year.

Rika/Terada are a cute pair, now if CLAMP would do a Ten years later for CCS to see how everyone is doing, then It be cool.

Yawn.. Love doesn't care about age, height or any physical property, it only care about the feelings of 2 persons about each other. - Anonymous quote

Just let Rika and Terada-sensei be, If they really get close to each other, then the couple just wait for a few years and then get married. And besides, it;s kinda like that with teh whole, nadeshiko + fujitaka relationship, only this time, it happened when nadeshiko was in high school (i think)  ^_^

I think I read somewhere that the marraige age in Japan used to be 13 years old for girls. They probably changed it to 15/16 by now. I guess things are pretty different in each country when it comes to situations like this.

Another issue pointed out by CLAMP.

It makes CCS the posterboy for alot of relationship barriers. Think about it.

The legal age for marriage in Japan is 18, but girls can get married at 16 with their parents' permission.

Strange, because that's the law in American as well.150 years ago a girl was considered an old maid if she didn't marry by the age of 16. Guess both culture and time play an important factor in that.

Well back in the day, 150 years ago in America, a person lived to about 30 or 40, so marring young was a thing to do.

In Japan, 150 years ago, and still going on very rarely today, are arranged marrages, which could start at age 4 back then, but now its at 16.

I have nothing against RikaxTerada (I like it more than dislike it :)), it's just that I think it would be really awkward... I'm guessing he's in his late 20's? And he gave her a ring? I know that people around that age would be really uncomfortable in that predicament. That's another thing: I was surprised Rika was ready about love and everything. I was also quite surprised that Terada wasn't interested in a person around his age (who'd be more developed emotionally and physically). But the coupling is agreeable. I see no problem in them continuing their relationship when she's considerably older. They're rather kawaii!

I would like to argue that, because even though Rika is young, she is extremely mature, whether by her cultural upbringing, or because she had to be. The Japanese culture is famous for their mannerisms, and being polite, but she seems to exceed that. She is always poised and graceful, in both actions and words. Her only give away that she is a child is that she gets embarrassed easily. Other than that, she always acts with grace. It could be because of her family, or her culture, or by choice, or even by all three factors. It is a bit confusing in that sense.
