Debate: Justify Humanity
Takeru:
This a thread from a debate board on a forum I own. I wanted to post it here, to see what you guys thought. The text which follows is from the member who started this thread on the other aforementioned forum, which was actually quoted from another person who had originally written (and posted) this on a debate board in the forum they owned. So yeah, you guys are the third generation of forum-goers answering this question.
The author of this has been chosen to remain anonymous, along with the identity of the first forum to which it was introduced.
Your task, should you choose to accept it, is to morally justify the continued existence of Humanity.
Now, before you ask "dude, what in sam hell are you talking about?", consider this. Following it's evolution, Humanity has spread across the surface of the planet like a cancer. Destroying ecosystems and species at a rate of 580 extinct species per day, allowing hundreds of thousands of our own kind to die preventable deaths per day, eliminating vital and amazing genetic diversity, pillaging the planet for resources, then dumping the poisons extracted from these resources into our common atmosphere, and generally f**king everything up for everyone who doesn't happen to be Human.
It gets even nastier. For, after all our cancerous behaviour to our homeworld, we behave the same to one another as well. While Humanity manages to use the crafty illusion of civilization to hide it, we're all just as savage as our ancient ancestors, we just have the technology and brainpower to be a lot more efficient at it. Ever hear the line "civilization is 3 meals away from anarchy"? Doesn't it ring true in your head? Even in well-fed developed nations, Humans still beat one another, rape one another, kill, steal, and act like total bastards with alarming regularity. Often, there isn't even any reason whatsoever for any of it. It doesn't take much to turn gentleman into raving savage, that seems clear enough.
Selfishly hoarding our riches and assets, we view one another as an enemy to be defeated, competion to be overcome for the express purpose of self-benefit. Sitting lofty in ivory towers of impregnable percieved morality, we condemn those around us, ruthlessly exploit those below us, and strive to steal the lives of those above us. We think in the short term, and act even shorter, perpetuating brutal injustices while we claim to value our unbiased judiciaries. We're all doing it right this minute, continuing to stomp third-world nations further into the mud via our preadatory, capitalistic lifestyle. Heck, we've organized entire international agencies to more efficently exploit and ruin 80% of Humanity for the benefit of the other 20% (I'm looking at you, IMF and WTO).
How can we justify our selfish, self-centered, murderous, destructive, shortsighted, and savage behaviour? What right do we have to destroy everything we touch with frightening amorality at the expense of every other living thing?
I think this'll be a very interesting thread.
This debate got a lot of positive reviews on the other two boards (except for one guy who said "psch... nerd talk", whom everyone immediately gave hell to). I wanted to see how you guys would react, since most of you steer clear of the stereotypical cynical, pedantic pseudo-emo bastard (except for when CardCaptors is the topic of discussion, at least), and so I'm delivering to a totally different crowd.
Have at it.
(Oh, and... no flame wars. Remember, I didn't make this thread so people can shoot insults at each other, as it is on dozens of other forums that have debate boards.)

in spite of every bad thing humans do, humans must continue to exist. Why? because they are the only one who can decide the fate of the planet. As in, we're the only ones who have free will. The animals or plants can't make their own decisions about the future of this planet, but we can, because we are made this way. God has given us free will to decide on the future of this planet, and although we abuse it, still he sends signs to remind us that the future of this planet and the human race depends on us. Thus, humans are important in the world. Without us, this world won't be in equilibirum.
(my opinion though, no flames please.... 0.o)
D.J.P:
I don't believe that.
This planet has survived nearly 4 billion years without us, over countless natural disasters, and will still survive when (if) we are gone, as far as the planet is concern humans have existed for not even a blink of an eye.

It is against my Christian belief that we are evolved from savages but I will agree that our behaviour is atrocious at times. We find the need to justify ourselves to the point that we need to kill. I'm not implying that we all do that, or even think that, but I'm sure nearly all of the population wants to hurt a person for their ridicule or physical abuse. As for our reasons to exist, I can't give a complete answer.
I believe our purpose for being here is to bring some good to the world (though nobody can be completely good) and leave a legacy. We are the only species that can leave a name for ourselves. Animals don't have that ability. To clarify, we are able to keep records, pass on family names (through men) and leave an intelligent culture. For example; art, music, languages. All animals of the same species speak the same language; dogs bark, cats meow, lions roar, but humans are the only creatures that can have multiple languages and know mulitple languages.
Maybe that is why we're here. We need to keep a record of this world in hopes that those records can pass on to the next world. It may not remain when the world comes to an end, but that possibility might exist. There is no way we can know if that happens until it actually does happen. By keeping a record, other generations can learn to grow and prosper. If one good thing can be said by mankind, it's that we have the ability to pass on our knowledge to our children, and they in turn can learn from it and build off of it. As previously stated, animals don't have that ability. They only know one life and will only ever know one life. We can go further than that.
That's my opinion.
