Show contentIn Koryo, when they called up Yuuko, didn't she say thats Fai's tattoo "was a device used to keep your magic power in check. Your magic is now what it was originally meant to be" or something like that, according to the Del Rey translation.

Show contentI always thought that Fye's tatoo was supposed to somehow "control" his magic when he used it or something like that...and that he did not want to use magic without it because...well, because it might become dangerous he can't control it...but that's only speculation, I don't think its actual function was ever revealed :/

Edit: woops, my bad :p I just checked and that's what she says in my version too ^^
