Sunflowers

In episode 47 of CCS, when Syaoran tells Sakura and Tomoyo that he isn't going back to Hong Kong after all, Sakura is really happy about it, but right before they show Sakura being happy, they show these random sunflowers.  Why do they randomly show sunflowers like that?  What is their significance?  I was just wondering this because I've never seen it used in any other anime before and it was the only instant in CCS to my knowledge where they used it.
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com

Hmmm...interesting question. I don't have the answer but now my curiousity is aroused. I have a Sakura figurine where she's standing around a group of sunflowers:

Anyone know?!!

The sunflowers are like Kero's flowers. I think it may be that conection about Kero and the sunflowers.... I think.... or...
Maybe... Nadesico loves the sun... so...  well.... it's my opinion :heh:

Well, Kero IS the Guardian of the Sun...maybe it includes sunflowers?!!
Maybe it was just a random screen shot...or something a lot more. I'll have to re-watch that episode and see if I can make heads or tails out of it.

I noticed that sunflowers are used at another point in this episode: when Li and Sakura are doing classroom chores, Sakura can be seen putting sunflowers in a vase. A quick look around the Web for a Japanese symbol meaning of sunflowers didn't give much, but condsidering they are Kero's favourite flowers, they should be attributed much the same way as in the West: strenght, warmth, etc. Considering the cheery little melody that was played at the shot in question, I'd say it was just a random pick, signifying Sakura's (and, assumedly, the audience's) happiness at Syaoran's announcement.

Life's but a walking shadow, a poor player
That struts and frets his hour upon the stage
And then is heard no more: it is a tale
Told by an idiot, full of sound and fury,
Signifying nothing.

Interesting that sunflowers are being mentioned as I read another CLAMP series for the first time: WISH

There, a character named Usyagi (which looks a lot like Kero with long rabbit ears) floats down from the heaven as a personal messenger of God and hold in his arms...A SUNFLOWER!!!

Now what exactly this symbolizes I haven't got a clue and whether it's related to the sunflower scene in the CCS or coincidental, again I don't know but as Yuuko has said before: "There are no such thing as coincidences...there's only Hitsuzen!!!"

Generally a sunflower is interpreted as having  zest for life or energy.
I've also heard it referenced as "an eye to God" which would link to the scene in WISH.

I think it was more of just a cute! Yay! thing, myself.  But it is fitting none the less. ^^
