an interveiw with Vic Mignogna
« on: April 20 2007, 12:01 am »

I emailed Vic Mignogna because no one seemed to have asked him about Fai or Tsubasa Chronicle ((the dub, Vic Mignogna is going to voice Fay for those of you who are unaware)), and he emailed me back- he's really good about that. I asked him five questions, well... technically four, then I warned him about us yaoi fangirls giving him a hard time about KuroFay at the next few conventions, which he had already been well-aware of and is probably preparing for and dreading, (haha! XDDD) Anyway, I asked him these four questions:

1. I asked him about CLAMP cutting off ties with Bee Train and asked if Funimation knew if there would be any furthering of the series aside from the two seasons, to which he responded that he didn't know about any of that and that Funimation is only dubbing TWO SEASONS. (WAAAAAAH!!!)

2.I asked if Funimation knows how the series will end, and if so, does that affect how he plays the character, since Fay ((OBVIOUSLY)) has a very tragic angsty past. He told me he doesn't know how the series ends!!! CAN YOU BELIEVE IT?!! He didn't know how FMA ended, either, apparently, and it really helps him to get into the mood when he finds out by surprise and the emotionalness grabs him, I guess....

3. I asked which of his voices is going to sound most like Fay, and he said it's a mix between Ed and Dark, only more mature and soft, since Fay is very articulate and not as spastic as Ed is- then he inserted a lovely smiley, so here it is: ":)"

4. Finally I asked what I think we've all been waiting for. I asked about the nicnames Fay gives Kurogane and what kind of suffixes, if any, would stay. It seems that funaimation is sticking with traditional Funimation dubbing and leaving all '-san's, '-sama's, '-chan', and '-kun's out of the game. *pout* However, he did say they came up with these types of nicnames for Kurogane, and I quote his email::

"4. We have lots of fun nicknames for Kurogane....Kurgy, Kurgy poo, Kurgs, and others..."

How exciting... ^_^' Where did the 'o' go in 'KurOgane... it's not Kurgane... X< )

Nevertheless, I'm still looking very forward to the dub. ^_^

kurgy- poo??????? whats next, kurgy-wurgy X__X

"kuro-sama" is my fav of fai's nicknames. its cute, but respectful. i also like it cuz its the only one kuro doesnt blow-up about. :(

I suppose it's the only way they could make it easy for those following the anime only to understand; Those who don't know about suffixes. =/ This is going to make the fandom annoying in the future, I have a feeling. "Lyke, ewww wats wit dis -chan -kun -pun crap???1!", and things like that. *sigh*

I guess they tried. But a mix between Ed and Dark? o_O The two sound rather... different, at least to me.

The sufixes would be confusing yes but vic needs to be more creative and not mispronounce kuros name ~_~

Now, now. Let's not hate the silly VA. Was this an oral interview? I haven't heard him mispronounce his name yet, so I won't flame him until then. ^^ (Colleen Clinkenbeard, on the other hand? No mercy.)

And Fai's original nicknames aren't exactly the correct pronunciation of "Kurogane" either. =P (Kuro-puu =/= Kurogane.)

I don't think it's a big deal if they create new nicknames for Fai to call Kurogane in the dub because according to Del Rey's translation notes in the manga, Fai's nicknames for Kurogane don't mean anything in English anyway.  Besides, at least they'll probably keep the original names in the subtitles since Funi almost always keeps the Japanese honorifics in their official subtitled versions.  Either way it'll still be better than Cardcaptors and at least it's not the Animax dub.
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com

What, would you rather have "Kurogy"?

It sounds like this VA has at least done his homework in terms of the original anime production. Whatever he's forced to say on the air would probably be Funi's fault anyways. =/
The world won't give me a chance. I'm done asking for one.

he can use "kuro-poo" its exactly like the Kuro-puu.

---they just better put in "kuro-woof" "kuro-puppy" later in the series.

I think the reason they wont keep suffixes is because Tsuabsa is not a "Japan-centric" anime like most other anime...so other ppl who are not from Japan using Japanese suffixes would be weird.

Anyway, just kinda curious....and I dont mean to offend anyone but....some of you claim the anime is such a horrible adaptation, yet you're worried about the dub of the anime? ....that just seems kinda weird to me.

season 1 was cool. only the first few episodes were bad animation. the rest was awsome./

and i am a sailor moon fan, DiC destroyed the dub by babyfying it.
and need i mention the dreaded "Cardcaptors" ????

anyone who's watched an original anime from it's birth fears it's death thru dubbing.

Because how the anime is presented to america is a reflection on us, the fans. If the dub is awful, or parts of it are poorly done, people will in turn think differently of us. Like, "Eww, wtf is wrong with those TRC fans? That anime was crap.", sort of commentary.

ah. that too. "dubbies" would wonder why we'd dare recomend what can turn out to be a crappy dub. look at the site "smuncensored.com" (if it still exists) people who first watched the dub of sailor moon and then watch the original wonder what DiC and geneon and even CW were thinking -_- inserting lameass puns at inoportune moments. ruining "edge of your seat" momets by inserting wierd dialouge where originally there was quietness. that sort of thing.

as far as i know, ive only watched one Funi anime, FMA. there might be more... (was Zatch done by Funi?)....they dont use lame-puns at inoportune moments, do they?

Even if the dub is horrible, there's still a choice to choose between Japanese and Eng langs....thank goodness for DVDs...besides...I like Funi anyway, because it's the only company who's considerate to hard of hearing with subtitles for the Eng lang and Japan lang....oh Funi did Spiral too, and that was really well dubbed [well, minus Kanone...>_> ...southern accent? ...wtf?]

And yes...DiC did butcher Sailor Moon....but even after DiC was tossed out, the rest of the seasons [three and four] were still...>_> ....the only thing I liked about the dub are the voices, which fit them nicely [NOT USAGI'S....she annoyed the hell out of me]

Zatch Bell was dubbed by Viz.  The only anime Funi has produced edited dubs for has been DBZ and Yu Yu Hakusho but they have released uncut English dubs for both of those.   Funi is also producing an uncut re-dub of One Piece since 4Kids no longer has the rights to it.  The Wiki article on Funi lists all the titles they've released: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Funimation#Other_properties_licensed_by_FUNimation
