Different spellings of Shaoran's name.
« on: June 06 2005, 10:37 pm »
I was wondering, but what is the proper spelling of Shaoran's name?  I've seen Xiao Lang, Shaoran, Shaolan, and Syaoran.  I like spelling the name "Shaoran" because it gives you a better idea of how to pronounce the name, and it's the spelling Geneon uses in their official subbed release of CCS and I tend to always go by official sub's spellings, but it seems like everybody else, including fansubbing groups, spell his name "Syaoran."  So, which spelling is the correct one to use?
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com

As posted by someone else in the forums (can't remember who)

Sh and Sy are interchangable - so Shaoran and Syaoran are both said the same way

Xiao Lang is his chinese name of course.

As for Shaolan I haven't seen that used.

I've seen all of them used.....as far as I can tell...

Xiao-lang is his chinese name

Syaoran is his official japanese name. (plus, it's used in CLAMP's manga, so it's gotta be right!)

Other spellings of 'Syaoran' are ususally found on subbed episodes, and aren't correct...I think.

And remember, the american/UK/australian versions call him Li Showron...which is basically switching his name round and changing the spelling.

Then of course, there are his french names (Lionel Li, I think) and other countries give him other names too

And remember, the american/UK/australian versions call him Li Showron...which is basically swithcing his name round and chcnaging the spelling.

but they have to do that really because the western side would not understand why his family name is first.
so its like just making it make more sense to the westerns.

and also this might be a bit off topic but i remmember on tv when they were talking about the episode. teh presenters were saying the names all wrong, i mean Even worse than the dub. i have a fair bet the presenters don't even Watch the episodes that they play, they were just forced to talk about it.. Yeah, I know.....they say it, and I'm like OMG! You're so wrong....

But anyway, I understand about the switching, I was just commenting on how similar the names are. Does anyone else have any spellings/alternate names for Syaoran?

I believe Moonbrat's Cherry Blossoms CCS site spells Shaoran's name "Shaolan" too, and I think I saw a clip from a fansub spelling his name like that in an AMV once.

Syaoran is always how I've known it.
It's funny, when I read the books or subtitled I don't ever even notice how they spell the names anyway!
I guess pay more attention to what they are saying then how they are spelling.

I guess they changed the y to h on the subtitles to help people know how to say the name.
I love Syaoran though.

shaolan is just like shaoran. the 'sya' is actually 'sha' but i guess its a old way of spelling it or CLAMP just likes it that way. its only a 'l' because the pronounciation is between a 'l' and a 'r'. but its usually a 'r'.

Also with the R and L thing, a LOT of Japanese have an inability to establish S and SH as seperate sounds. They might go "shailing in a sip" for example.

some people say "showron", in the animanga they had "Showran" as Syaoran's last name, and Li as first..
