Title: Homework Thread
Post by: moezychan on September 10 2005, 02:24 am
This thread is inspired by VexNet, from The Post Thread VI. This is where you'll post a homework problem, and somebody can help. It doesn't matter whether you're in college, high school, or middle school. I'm hoping that the majority of the forum will participate in helping. Also, considering that I'm going to become a teacher, I hope that you'll help the person with the problem, but allow the person to figure out the answer by themselves. Nobody will learn anything if all we do is give them the answer. This is merely a help thread; not an answer thread!

Note from SLi: This thread is not for having others do your homework for you. Such posts will be deleted without question. This thread is getting assitance when you don't understand something or need something checked.

I need a bit of advice....
My Socials teacher asked us to do a poster about responsabily in school.
But I don't have any idea of how or which kind of images I may use for the poster. I already have one idea: Do your homework.
But I need at least 3 ideas. Any suggestions?

I would say that it depends on if the poster has to be serious or not.
Ideas for a serious poster:
- Do your homework / Study hard: pics of students reading or writing
- Pass between classes in an orderly manner: pics of students in hallways, possibly in lines.
- Be respectful of teachers and faculty members: pics of students doing nice things for teachers
- Don't sleep in class: pics of students looking alert and attentive.

Ideas for a not so serious poster:
- Don't thow things in class: pics of students throwing things
- Be respectful: students sticking out therr tounges or clearly not listening.

Things of that nature may get you thinking.  As far as how to do it, it shouldn't be too hard.  I had to do something like that a long time ago.  Either take pictures off the internet or cut them out of magazines.  Paste or tape them to the poster, and write the rule/responsibility next to each picture.  I hope I was able to help or at least give you ideas.   :heh:

My Pre-AP english teacher (8th grade) asked all of us to write a personal narrative.  A special moment that happened to us.  Sounds pretty easy, yes.  But the twist is that we're usually familar on writing with 1st person on our point of view.  She wants us to write it in another person's perspective.  Like let's say your gonna write about the winning soccor goal, you wouldn't write it from your point of view, but like from a younger sibling's POV.  My problem is this.  I don't know what to write about, and I don't know who's POV I should do it in

First of all you have to pick an event then, review who was all there.   A little kid's pov is an interesting idea but you wouldn't be able to use highly big words unless that kid is a genuis or something.

Mozey~Chan i'm sorry but my computer has decided to hate pdf files. everytime i click on one the computer shuts down  so I can't be much of a help  (Soo sorry!)

That's alright. I figured it was something like that. I was able to find my 3 sources, but I would like somebody to review my work. I will do the typing, and you, or anybody else who is so kind, can read my work and tell me what mistakes I may be making, and give me a few pointers. Do you by any chance have Microsoft Word? I could send you what I have written in an email attachment.

Now on to Onii ChanTouya; if I were doing the paper I would write about something that was very important in my life. Examples: a birthday that was very meaningful, the first time you learned to ride a bicycle, you went to your first concert, or your parents took you to an exhibit or show that you enjoyed. Tell me if those work, and if not I'll see give more examples. Hopefully this will give you an idea.

As for how to write your paper, your teacher means in 3rd person POV. A perfect example would be a fanfic. If you want, read my fanfic All By Myself on my fanfiction account. I'm not sure if you like the show Teen Titans, but in this fanfic I'm constantly switching between 1st person POV and 3rd person POV. My username is the same; moezy-chan. This is my URL:
http://www.fanfiction.net/~moezychan

After reading this, you'll get an idea on how to write in 3rd person POV. Please tell me if you are unfamiliar with these terms and I'll PM you with an explaination. Hope this helps.

I need a bit help in English...does anyone know any books that are written in Chronological order and some books that have flashbacks in them?
and, I don't understand the meaning of 'irony'..what's the difference in irony and sarcasm?
Title: Re: Homework Thread
Post by: Star on September 15 2005, 08:25 am
The Poisonwood Bible (has very little to do with the bible)   is flashbacks and
Watsons go to Birmingham is Chronological  (even if it is one big flashback)
lord of the flies is chronological but i don't recomend reading it
Bartimaeus (Amulet of Samerkand or Golem's eye ) Flashes  from person to person  Let me know if you need anymore!
EDIT!!:
Irony is like something Ironic  uh..

An old man turned ninety-eight
He won the lottery and died the next day
It's a black fly in your Chardonnay
It's a death row pardon two minutes too late
And isn't it ironic...dontcha think

It's like rain on your wedding day
It's a free ride when you've already paid
It's the good advice that you just didn't take
Who would've thought...it figures

Mr. Play It Safe was afraid to fly
He packed his suitcase and kissed his kids goodbye
He waited his whole damn life to take that flight
And as the plane crashed down he thought
"Well isn't this nice..."
And isn't it ironic...dontcha think
(thanks to Alanis Morissette she wrote a song about irony!)
Title: Re: Homework Thread
Post by: Alexiel on September 15 2005, 08:35 am
Irony -
1. The use of words to express something different from and often opposite to their literal meaning.
2. An expression or utterance marked by a deliberate contrast between apparent and intended meaning.
3. Dramatic irony.
4. Socratic irony.

Sarcasm -
1. A cutting, often ironic remark intended to wound.
2. A form of wit that is marked by the use of sarcastic language and is intended to make its victim the butt of contempt or ridicule.
Note: Ironic is kinda like sarcasm...

Whichever one you believe is correct, these are definitions for the words.

The difference between Irony and Sarcasm... well, I really have no idea how to explain it. :sweatdrop:

As for the chronological books, I don't believe I know any. o.o"

Here's an example of irony, and it ties in to how this thread was started. In The Post Thread VI the topic of politics was started. I mentioned that my latest assignment, had to do with politics. I have to choose one of the amendments and defend it. It is ironic that 2 days earlier, I was given the assignment. To simplify, irony is similar to a coincidence.

Now sarcasm. I can be very sarcastic at times and here is an example. I will be getting ready to go to my job, which I hate with a passion, and I will change into my work uniform. Suddenly my sister, whom I share a room with, will come in while I'm changing and say, "Are you going to work, Maureen?" and usually I will answer, "No, didn't you hear, wearing work uniforms are the newest trend now! Everybody's doing it! Of course I'm going to work, baka!"

That's sarcasm. Hope that helps.

Oh, you are welcome... I really want to help, though!!! *Starts thinjking really hard on different options*

Maybe you can say that arms take a high role of importance in the battlefield. They have been there since the Stone Age, and thanks to them we are able to survive (when we still killed animals with a knife, for example)
Title: Re: Homework Thread

Another option is how they used arms (as an example, a knife) for daily uses, such as cutting the skin of an animal and making their clothes. Or cutting tree braches with axes to make their houses....

That would be about knives. I'm writing about why we should keep guns. Also, the ideas should be recent as in the last 5 years. I don't think cavemen would fit into my paper, but I do appreciate the help.

We should keep guns because the soldiers that protect an important place (like in London, there are lots of police people carrying guns near important places) can use them if there is a situation that would need violance...............

Sorry if I am not much help...  :dodge:

hello Moezy-chan.. how about people keep guns because of psychology purpose.. it makes them feel safer or people who keep guns thought that there may other 'bad' people out there who wants to harm them..

next, due to peer pressure? or due to the inefficiency of the current police force?

Ok, I have another assignment that I need help on. It's in my Early Childhood Music Class. I have to do a presentation in front of my class.

Here is what the assignment paper says:

Rote Song 3 minutes
(15 points)

Choose a song that would be of interest to children, prepare it and teach it to the class.
Greeting, introduction of song
Visual aid
Memorization
Follow correct procedure for teaching the song
Sing in a voice that will be comfortable for children

I have to do the presentation on September 30. For me, the date today is: September 19. I have an idea for the song: Mary Had a Little Lamb. If there are anymore suggestions on songs, I would appreciate that. Also, any ideas for my visual aids would help.
Title: Re: Homework Thread
Post by: Star on September 20 2005, 07:04 am
Hmm.. Visuals  Of course you'll need a lamb, a school, and Mary
memorizing shouldn't be too hard
the correct procedure well your teacher should have told you that or else it's in the text book

Other suggestions of songs... Twinkle Twinkle little star?  A tisket a taskit?  Old  McDonald? BINGO?   3 blind mice?  I've been working on the railroad? Are you sleepy?  Incy Wincy Spider?

I like Mary had a Little Lamb though.  It was the second thing I taught myself how to play on the piano.

wow this brings me back to the kindergarten days  lol

You can introduce the song by telling how this song has been known and heard  around the world.

Another song you may use is the famous Lullaby. This one is even MORE known and famous. But Mary had a little lamb is very nice, too.

I only have 3 minutes for the entire presentation. That would take me at least 10 minutes, and I have to teach it to the class as if I was teaching a kindergarten class. It's sort of like cosplay, only for the students, and not me.

I like A Tisket a Taskit, BINGO, and I've Been Working on the Railroad. Those might work. Also, it's not in the textbook. If I was doing A Tisket a Taskit, I would need a basket; for BINGO I could probably use a stuffed dog, or a poster, and for I've Been Working on a Railroad, I would need something like a pick or a hammer. Not real though. Let me do some research and see what would probably work best.

Thank you both for your help.

Starfire, arigatou. I have a book that has children's stories and songs in it, and it shows how to make the song: A Tisket, A Tasket. It contains visual aids and a presentation. Once again, thank you for your suggestion.

hehe.. when you said song for children.. 'twinkle twinkle little star' appeared in my head..

visual aids.. Moezy-chan.. how about making some cardboard stars (preferably with those shiny shiny stuffs on it) with handle for the class of little kids and as they sing, ask them to wave those stars..

as for memorisation part.. write out the whole lyrics and then replace some words with pictures..
for example: replace the word 'star' with a picture of star...

I appreciate everyone's help in giving me suggestions on how to do my presentation, and even though I said that I found out what to do, I changed my mind. I thought about it, and I'm going to stick with my original choice: Mary Had a Little Lamb.

Here's how I'm going to do my presentation: I will first sing the song to the class, and they will copy me (keep in mind that this class like me are college students as well. It's required that I teach in front of my peers or I can't become a teacher) and then I got the idea of doing a puppet show.

There's a child's library on campus that has materials for students who are going to become teachers, and one of those materials are puppets! They have a girl puppet with curly hair, and she is going to be my "Mary" and they also have a lamb puppet! I am going to say that I couldn't have done it without any of you. You all got me thinking and it was thinking that brought me to a conclusion!

I have a math project......that is absolutly driving me to pieces (in otherwords, ive gone insane)

Its order of operations.......backwards..We each picked a certain date in History.  I cant remember mines right now.  But it all has to equal to that result.  Like if you had 1333 your equations would have to equal to that.  Using all the PEMDAS-Parenthesis, Exponents, Multiplication, Division, Addition, Subtratction......-sighs- -.-

Do you have to mess around with different numbers to get it?  or do you have set numbers?
do you have to use all of the orders?
Title: Re: Homework Thread
Post by: moezychan on September 26 2005, 09:03 am
In other words you would have to first Subtract the number, then Add, Divide, Muliply, Exponents, and Parenthesis. Do you have to do it against another number? And if you do, do they supply that number, or do you choose one?

*confused look* Im sorry...but i have no clue what your saying ^^;; im rather dumb in that sense

Each equation has to equal the final number.  There isnt an order in which you do the PEMDAS.  As long as their all there

For instance, your number is 1497. Do you choose another number say 536 and use PEMDAS to get back to your original number? Sorry if that sounds confusing.

I dont think so.  Here's an example I got from my sheet.  your prolly right though ^^;;

Starting number:1776
1767+9
2000-233+9                                                Then you switch it around with the 10 expo2(20)-233+(81/27) expo2 going on the top.
100(20)-233+(3) expo2
10expo2(20)-233+(81/27)expo2

Post by: Star on September 26 2005, 09:35 am
i've got it this far
1489+8=1497
1900-411+8=1497

9.5(200)-411+8=1497
^     ^
these can be switched

hopefully this can get you somewhere

I'll need your email to send it. I'm assuming that you don't want to make your email public, so you can send me an email and I'll reply with the file attached. I didn't want to change it, so I just made minor grammer changes.

It depends on what interests you. Are you interested in battles, peace groups, or eliminating segregation. The best thing would be to list ideas that you like. When you like a particular subject, it makes the project easy, and fun! You can list your interests to me, and I'll see if I can think of anything ne?

Hmm... the only ones at the top of my head are the Women's Rights Movement, and the Civil Rights Movement....

Oh! I did a little research, and found some sites about this NHD you're talking about. There was one that gave a long list of specific suggestions. Here's the link: http://www.state.sc.us/scdah/topics.htm

The list is towards the bottom of the page. Hopefully this helps... and you haven't seen it already or something... ^_^;;

Arigato Moezy-sama!  :keke:

Everything in history is interesting to me.. Demo, I'd like to something that had a lot of action in it, possibly something that wasn't in the US, but it's fine if it was too.

Title: Re: Homework Thread
Post by: moezychan on October 19 2005, 01:53 pm
I need help with my next paper. This is for Essay 2 Here's the requirements:

1551 Essays #2 and #3

Essays 2 and 3 are closely related. Essay 2 will be an inquiry essay. Basically, you will take a broad topic and narrow it until you have a question to answer. For example:

Broad Topic                                Narrowed Topic                                       Inquiry

Terrorism >                         Safety on commercial airlines             Should airline pilots carry guns?

In essay 2, you will be required to  look at both sides of your issue, pro and con, yes and no. You'll find outside sources that support both points of view and analyze the issue thoroughly. In Essay 3, you'll take a stand and argue one side or the other, based on the research you did for Essay 2. Choose your topic carefully. These projects are going to comprise ;most of the rest of the semester, so pick something that not only won't bore you in 5 minutes, but also something "arguable. " For example, the inquiry "Is having a large national deficit  bad for the economy?" is a poor topic. Very few people would argue that a large deficit is great, and you won't find many credible sources that say it is. However, the inquiry "Will increasing taxes lower the national deficit?" will certainly yield plenty of pro and con sources.

Essay 2 - 5-7 pages (3 for each side of the issue).

These are the requirements. I already have the topic. I chose to do it on languages in the school system. Some people believe that Americans should only focus on the American language. I want to show the pros and cons of making language a requirement in school. My problem is though, I have plenty of positive sources that state why it is a good thing to have languages in the school, but I cannot find any negative sources.

Also, I need journals, and books to do this paper. I cannot do an internet search. I need credible sources. If anybody can help me, I'll again give 2 cookies for each source.
Title: Re: Homework Thread
Post by: augustserenade on October 19 2005, 02:07 pm
Hmmm.... focusing on the American language as in, they only teach English and don't offer any other languages like Spanish, French, etc.?

And would Adobe PDF documents online count as an journal resource? (I know when I do essays, I'm allowed to count them as printed articles or journals...) If they are for you, then I might have found one. From what I read, it seemed like they favored teaching English, but it also briefly gives an argument for the other side of the issue.

Here it is, just in case >_<

2) Don't try to memorize anything really long. Unless you have a good memory, and then again mine is very very bad. But memorizing a 130 line sonnet won't impress anyone if your shaking. Body language does matter. Pray for the podium if your figgety like myself.
3) Practice but percive. Shakespeare's actors had little time to rehearse and they suceeded. Are you allow note cards?

I agree with Okamirei, the book "where the sidewalk ends" has many nice poems.   Among my favorite is  "if the world was crazy", "Hungry Mungry", "Smart", "the farmer and the queen".  If you want to try a longer poem, i think " The Unicorn" is more than 40 lines and its something to do with Noah's arc.

do you mean, like lets say, clicking on a person name (forum) and the page changes to the person profile, or clicking on the url and another page blocks up?

One of my classes is on Web Design. I was wondering, if any one knows about XHTML, and a good tutoral on FLASH? Can you guys please help me :sad5: before I start going crazy  :BangHead:

heeee

you should have a good read up on the CSS Zen Garden's book.  if you have time read through all the w3c documents, too...  xHTML is basically HTML made to fit the XML specs.  therefore you shouldn't use inline styles and styling tags (like "b" or "font") to style content... you should keep your content and styling separate (separate html and css files) as well as using semantic markup (like using a h1 tag for a header instead of having a table cell with some font tags to make it bigger).  and some other things like selfclosing tags and such.  if you have no idea about it you should start by viewing the sources of some standards-compliant websites and figure out what each tag or each property means.  dont go to xanga or some other crappy website and try to make any sense of it >_<

Umm...I need some help... Mom gave me homework on starting a web site/design... I don't think I understand the "html" yet... I have a website builder program called "Web Drawf", I understand some of it but I don't understand how to insert codes...

you can start with notepad..  a website's first line should start with a DOCTYPE declaration stating what kind of document it is.  you can go to w3.org to find the different doctypes... html tags work like this <tag> content </tag>.  if the tag doesn't have content in it, you need to close it or self close it (depending on the tag).  then you split the remaining content into a header and a body.  the <head> isn't shown in the page itself, but files like your stylesheet and javascript can be loaded in the background, and the title and meta information as well.  the <title> tag shows up as the words on the titlebar of your browser. (ex. <title>capturedwings forums</title>).  the <link> tag can link to your CSS file (<link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="style.css"/> [did you notice the self closing tag?]).  the <body> tag hosts all the content that appears on the page.  you shouldn't use tables for your layout because its semantically incorrect.  tables are for tabular data, not layouts.  the <div> tag is for layouts.  read up on html and css at w3schools.com

Has someone already spoke about Quadratics? If so please link me to it or something.
If not, don't get mad at me but is there steps on how to find a Quadratics formula from the quadratics pattern
(note: if everything was linear I wouldn't have to worry about getting credits to pass Lvl 1 NCEA)

When you say popular, do you just mean well known, or are you looking for modern poetry?  What  poems do you have so far?

Etou, well, ones that'll have published literary critiques on them. So far the ones I have are "An Irish Airman Forsees his death", "A loom of years", and "a psalm of life"

What kind of design are you talking about? Clothing, home decorating, gardening? If you could give me these specifics, I'll be more than happy to help you find the terms.

Hi, I have a homework in religion and I hope you can help me with this.

The project is about Moses, 10 Commandments, personal experiences that can relate to it, etc. Our teacher said that I should present it in a creative way (like scrapbooks, etc.).

If you know a good way to present a project please answer. Thanks. ^^:
