Title: Hoe! Phwee!
Post by: Hikari B. on July 19 2006, 08:36 am
It really makes me wonder about that during the translation. I'd appreciate it if someone could explain to me why Tokyopop (I think...) changed 'Hoe!' to 'Phwee!' in the CCS 1st arc (Western version) and Master of the Clow.

I've often wondered it myself. It could be possible that they wanted to keep the English translations child friendly, and in all reality, the word "hoe" in English means

a woman who sells her body
. That might be the reason, but then, why didn't they do it with the Clow Card Arc? It's truly confusing.

But why "Phwee?" That sounds like an exclamation of happiness. "Hoe" was originally fright or frustration. XD

I was thinking that but what made them change it back to 'Hoe!' in 1-6, the ones in right-to-left format?

Actually, a hoe is a gardening tool. Take away the 'e' at the end and you've got a bad word XD

It is a gardening too, and take away the e and it is a bad word, but in some cultures in the states it is spelled with an e. Around where I live we spell it with an e.

Hmm... I can imagine it would look very bad if a Tokyopop was partly the cause of 40,000 little girls getting sent to the principal's office for reportedly, 'randomly calling other students ho's'. XP I've actually been asked why I sometimes say 'hoe', on other forums... XD

Lol, so true Suu-chan XD I sometimes accidentally say "hoe" in public, and people ask me what it means.  :sweatdrop: So I don't do it much except around my family, and online.

Yes, is going green both ways XD. Maybe the American dubbers can't say it so without saying "hoe" and thinking of the human "hoe".

Well it all depends on the situation. American words aren't taken as offensively as they used to be, but some are assumed to be bad anymore, and this one is one of them.  :sweatdrop:

I always used to think of Hoe as said like 'Phwee', but 'Ho-eeee'...

...But that's just me.

Same here. When I first saw that, I was like what is she saying. But after going on the internet (internet, can't live with out it), I found out what she ment by. So it doesn't bother me.
