Well, Machine Robo Rescue, which is about as kiddy as they come, was pretty awesome.

Until the last bit, but I'll pretend that never happened. Can't believe they got rid of Stealth's beam rifles. >_>

Violence can be alright in anime...it just depends how they show it. Is that why there are boy's anime? Because they think girls can't handle blood and injury?
I don't think having lots of violence is neccessarily what makes it a shounen anime or that people think girls can't handle lots of violence.  After all, CLAMP's X is a shoujo anime, yet it apparently is a very violent series....
When her leathery, crow-footed face turned towards my raised hand and said, “Yes, the boy in the Sailor Mercury t-shirt,” I sprung into action. It took me a brief 20 seconds to acquire the bokken (wooden sword) I had secured to the underside of our chairs with duct tape the night previous. Shouting “Japan BANZAIII!” in the manner of those noble kamikaze pilots from the War of United States Aggression (so tactlessly referred to in your history books as “World War II”), I charged the stage, bringing down the bokken forcefully onto the plywood table in front of Tiffany Grant. It was a tragic mistake not to channel my ki correctly. The bokken splintered into a thousand pieces, leaving me with no other plan of attack besides shouting, “You’re no Asuka!” as two Ohayocon toughs escorted me out of the room-SomethingAwful.com

Hmm...seen that anime...is it really a shoujo? I thought that one was a mixed gender anime....

Well, according to animenewsnetwork.com's anime review section, X is a shoujo anime, but anime these days tend to blur the genres a lot, so it's hard to tell.  I used to think Angelic Layer was a shoujo anime, but it's apparently a shounen anime. ^^;;

Y'know this question really comes to a head when you're in Japan, you're a guy, and you're buying the latest issue of Ribon so that you can read the latest chapter of Aishiteruze Baby and get the cute little Yuzuyu alarm clock that comes free with it (no I don't actually use the clock, but it was a nice souvenier). Actually in the anime club that I'm part of it's very normal for us guys to be obsessed with shoujo romance shows. Hana Yori Dango is one of our favorites (and the ratio of guys to girls in our club is about 15 - 1) as is Aishiteruze Baby, and Uchuu no Stellvia used to be a big hit too. Mostly I'd say the only anime that are strictly gender specific are things like Gravitation... guys just shouldn't touch that series, or Fake. On the flip-side, girls probably shouldn't watch the ultra-guy-ish stuff with all kinds of fanservice. Other than that most anime is up in the air as far as who should or should not be expected to watch it. I personally choose my anime based on how good the story is and whether or not there's at least one cute character involved.

Of course this doesn't mean everyone should go around telling non-otakus that their favorite show is about a high-schooler trying to raise a five year old...

I try not to even look at anime and manga in categories.
Most anime and manga, it seems like you can't really put them in one specific category. I think that is what makes a great story, it has a little of everything.

I love CCS, I also love Legal Drug (hmm is that boy or girl manga?).
I love xxxHolic, Fruits basket, but I'd also love more action manga as long as the story is good.
I wonder if anyone has ever done a poll asking what Manga or Anime you like, and if you are a boy or girl. I bet many people would be surprised.

Interesting Idea. I can make a survey script to do that.

Might add some spark to the forums :D
